Presentation Summary:

Research underway into machinima filmmaking and media convergence, with focus on the creative process of machinima and what it means to the filmmakers.

Paper Abstract:

The presentation introduces a qualitative research study of machinima (filmmaking in games and virtual worlds) and includes discussion of the approach. The purpose of the study is to gain insight into the creative processes of machinima and the meanings that the machinimators ascribe to their films. Machinima is seen as an example of the convergence of games, virtual worlds, art and filmmaking. The variety of people involved in machinima is related to the notion of a "pro-am" economy, for example their use of media "tools", and modification of game platforms.
